Genesis 2:8-9 « The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and placed there the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the LORD God made grow every tree that was delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. » (NAB)
Before God ever made man he made two very special trees: one was the source of life, the other was the source of death. It was after making these two trees that God then made man and breathed into him the breath of life.
The breath that God breathed into man was of the same essence as the tree of life. And by breathing into man, God put a natural compass inside of him that, if used properly, would always lead him to the tree of life.
When Jesus wrote to the seven churches of Asia in the book of Revelation he rebuked those of Ephesus for having left their first love. And then he said, that to the one who overcomes he would give the right to eat from the tree of life that is in the garden of God.
And in the very end of that book it is described how those whose robes had been washed in the blood of the Lamb would have constant access to the tree of life. My friend, God placed in your spirit at the time of your conversion the same compass that he put in Adam. And that compass, if used rightly, will lead you to that tree of life. Because the moment you accepted Jesus, God put the spirit of life in you and it is of the same essence as that tree!
How is it then that Adam and his wife fell? Simple, they got focused on the wrong tree and forgot about the best tree!
Both trees were in the middle of the garden. They were literally right next to each other. But they became so enamored by the forbidden tree that they lost sight of the best tree. And this will be our down fall as well.
When you get your eyes off of God’s word and God’s presence and begin to focus solely on the forbidden fruit, you won’t last long before you fall. And the longer your stare at the forbidden fruit the more you will forget the power that is in the tree of life. And the very thing for which you were made will suddenly seem pale in the light of the forbidden fruit.
What are you focusing on right now? What preoccupies your thoughts and imaginations? If it among the forbidden fruit, decide today to shift your gaze.
